When using Microsoft’s Remote Desktop Connection to access production web servers from your cubicle, one must never choose Shut Down when they meant to choose Disconnect to close the session. Must. Never. Choose.

    heheheh Everyone does that at least once; going forward, you’ll double check Every Time, and probably log off or disconnect successfully but then be filled with doubt and fear that you’ve shut down the server, at which point you immediately attempt to reconnect again to ensure that it is still running.

    My first time was a production Exchange server–thankfully, with only two mailboxes on it, as we were just switching over to it. That is when I learned that there are two kinds of people in the computer world–people who have f*ed everything up, and people who are going to f everything up.

    There’s no escaping it!

    I’m with girl. You have not truly lived until you have brought down a production server and have 7000+ people sitting around doing nothing for the 30 minutes it takes to bring back up a huge database server. I believe that little outage cost the company in question in excess of 6 figures.
